Two persons of the same family were injured in an elephant attack near Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve forest on Wednesday. The incident took place while the brothers were guarding the crops from the wild animals in their father’s land at night. Gundappan is a landlord with two acres of land in Dhoddapuram near Thalavadi in Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. He was raising maize crop on the farm, reported PTI.
On Tuesday, Gundappan had sent his two sons Madesh (19) and Sibu (16) to guard the crops during the night. The brothers reportedly stayed in a hut in the field.
At around 3 PM, the duo raised an alarm following which the people nearby rushed to the place. The villagers saw the elephant and chased it to a nearby forest area.
However, the brothers sustained injuries since the elephant had by then attacked the brothers and damaged the hut in which they were staying that night.
The brothers were both severely injured and after being treated at Thalavadi Government Hospital, they were taken to Chamrajnagar Government Hospital for additional care in Karnataka, said the report.
Later, the event was reported to the Thalavadi forest officials, and a case was registered. Currently, Thalavadi police are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, a female elephant believed to be between 25 and 30 years old was found dead at STR. Following the information of the elephant's death at Guthiyalathur forest region covered by STR, Kadambur Forest Range officials went to the Guthiyalathur Kappukadu area on Wednesday morning and found the female elephant lying dead with injuries.
Three forest veterinarians were called in, and they performed an autopsy on the animal. According to the authorities, the post-morterm report revealed that the female jumbo had suffered injured during a dispute between two elephants in the vicinity on Tuesday.
