Chennai: Madras High Court on Tuesday warned the Greater Chennai Corporation of initiating a suo moto public interest litigation petition as the residents of the city are facing issues due to the waterlogging condition after the torrential rains pound Tamil Nadu. The court further said suo moto proceeding would be initiated if the waterlogging situation doesn't come under control till Friday or Saturday.
According to the report in The Hindu, Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee questioned the GCC counsel as to what the corporation authorities have done in the last five years since the city was battered due to rains in 2015.

Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee told the state government the significance of maintaining water channels, “It is such a pity that half the year, we are longing for water and for the rest of the half, we are flooding or dying in the water. We are not a backward State. We are the most advanced State on many parameters. This cannot be the state of a leading State in the country," the Chief Justice said as quoted by the Hindu.
Justice Audikesavalu reportedly pointed out that the grave situation is mainly due to encroachments of the water bodies and channels.
