AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami demanded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin take responsibility for the recent spurious liquor-related deaths and resign from his post. The statement of EPS came on the day the toll increased to 18.

On Tuesday, Edappadi Palaniswami visited the victims receiving treatment at the hospitals in Chengalpattu and Villupuram. After meeting the victims, the Leader of Opposition EPS said, “There has been no stringent action against those selling spurious liquor. DMK members themselves are selling spurious liquor. CM MK Stalin must take responsibility for recent spurious liquor-related deaths and should resign. MK Stalin is a puppet CM who doesn't care about the welfare of the state's people.”

He also said that there is a major law and order failure in Tamil Nadu after the DMK government assumed office.

Palaniswami further asserted that the state government had failed to contain the sale of spurious liquor even after he had told the Assembly about the availability of hooch across Tamil Nadu.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the tragedy at Marakkanam in Villupuram was caused due to poor quality locally brewed hooch. In Chengalpattu, the victims had reportedly consumed industrial alcohol mixed with methanol content.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu government transferred the case to CB-CID for investigation. The state also suspended 10 police officers including Villupuram SP. It also transferred Chengalpattu police chief on Monday.

Around 400 suspected bootleggers have been arrested in a crackdown against spurious liquor.
