Theni: With Covid-19 raging in Tamil Nadu, and so is the death toll due to the deadly virus. In a shocking incident, the kin of the deceased was asked to search for the body in the mortuary where Covid corpses piled up.


Amid the pile of dead bodies, the deceased, Bala Dandapani’s relatives had to go through each and every corpse, who Succumbed to Covid and find him.


Bala, who hails from Nalla Karuppan Patti near Devadanapatti in the Theni district, went to Periyakulam Government Hospital for an examination on a week ago due to fever. The doctors who treated him at the hospital have sent him to Theni Government Hospital for further treatment. After being treated at Theni Government Hospital, he was diagnosed with Covid-19. He died of Covid-complication on May 31.

After his death, his relatives have come to retrieve the body as they were informed of his death. The hospital management said that the body was kept in the morgue. The hospital management did not come forward to assist in transporting the body. 


When relatives asked, "How do you hand over the body?",


"Go and take it yourself ..." said the medical administration


Following this, relatives went to the morgue, unpacked the corona corpses one by one, to find Bala’s body.


Relatives who have taken dead body without any safety equipment then took the corpse with them to their hometown and buried it in the cemetery. According to guidelines, They should follow several precautionary measures in burying the corpses, who succumbed due to Covid. But the funeral breached all the guidelines.

Theni is in a dire situation as the bodies of Covid victims piled up in the mortuary of the government hospital. When asked about this, the management of Theni Government Hospital told ABP Nadu, “We do not know any information about this. Even the hospital management was unaware of the tragedy of people searching for corpses in the morgue. This is the case not only with Bala but also with many dead bodies piled up in the hospital.
