Tamil Nadu: Water Resources Department Sounded Flood Alert In 11 Districts As Cauvery In Spate

The water resources department in Tamil Nadu on Saturday issued a flood alert along the Cauvery river in 11 districts of the state, as the public works department started releasing 1.45 lakh cusecs water from the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur. The 11 districts for which warning is sounded are Salem, Trichy, Karur, Erode, Namakkal, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore, which are located on the banks of Cauvery river.

In a release, Water Resources Department said, "The Mettur dam water level is at 120 feet and the inflow to the dam will be released as surplus water in the Cauvery river. The surplus water released from the Mettur dam will be 1,45 lakh cusecs at 10 PM and this will be increased to 1.7 lakh cusecs at any moment.

"It is required that all the people living on the banks of Cauvery and low-lying areas may be cautioned to move to safer places and all precautionary measures may be taken for safety and security of their lives and properties."

It is expected that the excess water released in the Cauvery river will be increased to 1.85 lakh cusecs by Sunday evening, said an ABP Nadu report. 21,500 cubic feet of water per second is being released through the dam power station.

200 cubic feet of water per second is being released for irrigation purposes in the East and West canals of the dam. 1.70 lakh cubic feet of water per second is being discharged from Mettur Dam.

The river Cauvery originates in the Western Ghats region of Coorg in the state of Karnataka and passes through the districts of Kodagu, Hassan, Mysore, Mandya, Bengaluru, Rural, Ramraj Nagar and passes through the districts of Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Trichy, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu and flows into the Sea of ​​Bengal.
