Chennai: Three persons including a school principal and contractor were arrested after a wall collapse killed three students of a government-aided school in Tirunelveli. On Friday, three students who were standing near the toilet were crushed to death while three other students sustained injuries after the ‘covering’ wall near the toilet of government-aided Schaffter Higher Secondary School on SN High Road collapsed in Tirunelveli on Friday morning.
According to a report on The Hindu, the mishap took place at Schaffter Higher Secondary School with a 143 years old school building and managed by Tirunelveli CSI Diocese. On Friday, the mishap took place when students went to the toilet during their interval period as a 6*5 Ft wall collapsed and fell on them. Two of them identified as D Vishwa Ranjan and K Anbazhagan died on the spot while a student R Suthish succumbed due to the injuries without responding to treatment upon reaching the hospital.

The three other students who were admitted to the hospital along with Suthish are recovering from the injuries but are stable.
However, the remaining students who were on the campus gathered in front of the school and conducted a road roko. Some of the students even created a ruckus by damaging the nearby vehicles with a demand to arrest the people who were responsible for the mishap.
Following this, District Collector V Vishnu immediately rushed to the spot and spoke to the injured students.The officials who conducted an inspection at the site said that the reason could be due to improper foundation provided to the 'covering wall', which is used to obstruct outsiders’ view of the restroom.
Later, the police arrested three persons including the school headmaster, correspondent and the contractor of the construction.
