Chennai: The Chennai district administration has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in the city on Friday due to the heavy downpour reported across the city. Apart from Chennai, schools are also set to remain shut in Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam districts. 


The district administrations of Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram have also announced holidays for certain taluks. In Tiruvallur, the district administration has declared holidays for Avadi, Poonamalle, Ponneri and Tiruvallur taluks. Kancheepuram has declared a holiday to Kundrathur taluk.

The schools in Puducherry and Karaikal are also set to remain shut for the next 2 days due to the heavy rains.


On Friday, IMD said, “Light to moderate rain at many places with isolated thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over the Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal area.”

“Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchirapalli, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Thenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.”


The IMD also said that light to moderate rainfall will continue in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal areas till November 7. 


As far as Chennai is concerned, the IMD said that moderate rain coupled with thunderstorms will likely occur in the next 24 hours. The sky will also remain cloudy. The temperature is likely to be around 30-31˚C and 25˚C respectively.
