Chennai: A resident of Madurai has filed a petition before the Madurai bench of Madras High Court seeking action against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly sharing a picture of himself with the parents of a minor rape and murder victim in New Delhi on his social media platforms.

A nine-year-old girl was raped and murdered allegedly by a priest and three workers of a crematorium near Delhi Cantonment in South-west Delhi in early August. Delhi Police had arrested four men shortly after the victim’s family alleged foul play and staged a protest. Condemning the act, the petitioner Mohammed Razvi had moved the Madras High Court recently.

In his petition, Razvi said that one should not reveal the identity of minor victims by any means as per various court directions and acts but Rahul Gandhi has violated the rules. He has over 19.5 million followers in his Twitter account, lakhs of people had viewed the picture and over 5000 people including former Manik Thakur and Rajya Sabha member KC Venugopal had retweeted it, according to the petition.

He further said in the petition that he had earlier filed a complaint with the police department demanding action against Rahul Gandhi and no action was taken on the petition due to political intervention.

He said that a case should be booked against Rahul Gandhi and others for revealing the identity of the victim under section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, section 23(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012, and section 228 of India Penal Code (IPC).

Justice Praveen Kumar who heard the case, adjourned it to September 9.
