Chennai: After police launched a search to arrest the murderer who killed and dumped a Class 10 girl in a garbage dumping site in Saravanampatti, the Coimbatore police on Friday arrested the lover of the deceased girl's mother on charges of murder and rape. The police also recovered gold jewels belonging to the girl and her mother.
Based on preliminary investigation, the police also said that the murder was planned to swindle the gold ornaments.
According to a report on Times of India, a 44-year-old resident Muthukumar was residing with his wife and two children in Saravanampatti. However, he started developing an extra-marital relationship with the mother of the deceased girl nearly 8 years ago since the mother separated from her husband.
Recently, the woman gave her gold ornaments and Rs 50,000 cash to Muthukumar to buy new ornaments for the girl. However, he did not return the gold nor did he buy new gold jewels to provide her. Hence, the woman started to pester him so he agreed to give it to her daughter.
On December 11, Muthukumar went to the minor girl's home when she was alone and told her to call her mother. While on the call, he informed the mother and the girl that he has the jewel at his home and the girl can go and collect it.
When the girl ended the call and went to his home. Muthukumar who was alone in the home tried to overpower her and rape her. However, she yelled and tried to escape. Immediately he smothered her with a pillow and strangulated her. Later he raped her and tied a rope around the girl.
Then he then wrapped the corpse in a blanket and a plastic sack and dumped it in a bush near the garbage heap. However, a bad smell started to emanate from the place and sanitation workers searched the place and found the corpse.
In the contrast, Muthukumar went along with the woman to give a complaint and he also spread the word in the village that the girl took away all the jewelry and eloped from the place.
However, the police zeroed down on him and conducted an investigation after which he revealed the truth. He was later arrested and police recovered 4.25 gold ornaments from him.
