Chennai: Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam candidate who contested in Ward 36 of Tirupur died by suicide on Thursday night. The candidate received only 44 seats as against the winning DMK candidate who secured 3,319 votes.
The candidate also reportedly received Rs 50,000 as a debt to pay a deposit for his seat and for poll expenditure, However, he suffered a huge blow and lost even his deposit.
According to a report on ABP Nadu, the 55-year-old candidate Mani (55) was a daily wage labourer and a functionary of Makkal Needhi Maiam. During the run-up for the local body polls, the party gave him a seat in Ward 36 of Tirupur.

The candidate was motivated that he will win the polls with a majority since he had the support of the people in Tirupur. He also took to door-to-door campaigns.
However, on February 22, when the results were out he was shocked to learn that he received only 44 votes.
He was depressed from Tuesday over his loss and the debt. On Thursday night, he reportedly took the extreme step and was found dead on Friday.
The Tirupur police rushed to the spot and sent the body for autopsy. The police are also probing on the other angles that could have led to him taking the extreme decision.
