India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of light thunderstorm and lightning with light to moderate rain at isolated places over Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Nagapattinam and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamilnadu in the next three hours. The weatherman also warned of slippery and waterlogged roads as part of the impacts due to rain, which could also affect the traffic in these areas.

This comes as the state continues to witness heavy rainfall leading to the closure of schools in Chennai and other cities. According to PTI, Chief Minister MK Stalin has asked ministers, legislators and representatives of local bodies to provide all necessary support to the people in rain-affected areas.

On Wednesday, Chennai and nearby regions in northern coastal Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall in the range of 5 cm-6 cm and even above this, a meteorological department official told the agency.

A Regional Meteorological Centre bullen in Chennai said a Low Pressure Area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea developed into a Well Marked Low Pressure Area on Wednesday. As per the agency, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and the low pressure system, rainfall is expected at many places in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry up to December 3.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an 'Orange' alert for the residents of North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal with a warning of extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.4 mm) on December 3 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 4.
