Tamil Nadu Hikes Property Taxes Across State, Chennai Residents To Pay At Least 50% More

Chennai: Tamil Nadu government increased property tax fee across the state with especially Chennai residents paying at least 50% more than the current tax amount. The government also imposed the changes from April 1. 

According to a report on Times of India, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department hiked the property tax by 50% in core city areas of Chennai while the areas included after 2011 will pay 25% and other corporations of the state will also pay around 25% of the fee.

In the core area, the homes less than 600 sqft will witness an increase in taxes by 50% while homes over 600-1200 sqft will witness a tax hike by 75% and houses between 1201-1800 will see a 100% hike. The houses which are more than 1,801 sqft will face a hike of 150%. 

For newly added areas in Chennai and other Corporations, houses between 600-1200 sqft will witness 50% hike in property tax and houses between 1201-1800 sqft will witness 75% hike and houses more than 1,801 sqft will witness 100% rise.

Commercial buildings will see 150% hike and education institutions will see 100% rise in property taxes. 

Tamil Nadu government said the property taxes have been hiked to match with Centre's norm and since there's a decline in the revenue of the civic bodies with an increase in expenditure.

As per the hiked fee, Chennai residents pay Rs 1,215 for a 600 sqft home but the rates are much higher in other Metropolitian cities with Mumbai residents paying Rs 2,157 and Bengaluru residents paying Rs 3,464.
