Tamil Nadu: HC Quashes Actor Suriya’s Plea Seeking Interest Waiver For Income Tax

In 2011, the Income Tax (IT) department had assessed the income tax that is to be paid by the actor for two financial years - 2007-08 and 2008-09 - and directed him to a pay of Rs 3.11 crores.

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed the writ petition filed by actor Suriya seeking waiver of interest for the income tax assessment done for two years 2007-08 and 2008-09.

In 2010, the department conducted a search operation at the actor’s premises including T Nagar residence, Boat Club area bungalow and his offices, and at his close associates’ premises. In 2011, the Income Tax (IT) department had assessed the income tax that is to be paid by the actor for two financial years - 2007-08 and 2008-09 - and directed him to pay Rs 3.11 crores, according to a Times of India report. 

Challenging it, the actor had filed a petition before the income tax appellate tribunal. The tribunal inturn had directed the actor to pay the amount estimated by the IT department. As the tribunal had taken three years to deliver judgement, the actor had moved the High Court in 2018 seeking exemption from the waiver of interest for the income tax assessment. 

Judge SM Subramaniam who heard the case on Tuesday, dismissed the case after hearing the IT department’s argument. The department had argued that as the actor did not extend his cooperation to the officials for income tax assessment, interest was levied against him, according to a ABP Nadu report. 

About ten days ago, the Judge had refused to allow actor Dhanush to withdraw a plea seeking exemption from entry tax for importing a luxury car from the UK. The actor had filed the case in 2015. On July 13, 2021, the High court slapped a penalty of Rs 1 lakh against actor C Joseph Vijay for failing to pay the entry tax for importing a luxury car in 2012. The Justice had also directed the actor to pay the tax to the commercial tax department within two weeks.
