The Indian Air Force has mobilized helicopters to conduct rescue operations and deliver relief supplies to areas in southern Tamil Nadu affected by a devastating heavy rainfall early this week. Intense rainfall for over 24 hours led to a severe flood crisis in Southern Tamil Nadu, prompting both the State and Central Governments to initiate extensive rescue and relief efforts for the affected people.
















According to ANI, IAF helicopter airdropped relief materials in the rain and flood-affected areas of Tamil Nadu.

Southern Air Command IAF Media Co-ordination Centre said, "Operating in inclement weather, IAF helicopters, Mi-17 V5 and ALH have flown more than 20 hrs, air-dropped over 10 tons of relief material and evacuated stranded personnel, including woman and child from rooftop / isolated areas."

 

A pregnant woman who was stranded in a train near Srivaikuntam was rescued by a helicopter on Tuesday. The woman delivered a healthy boy baby at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai on Wednesday. The remaining passengers were also rescued by Southern Railways and sent to Chennai by a special train. 

 

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and gave a request petition to declare the damage caused by the Michaung storm and the heavy rainfall in the southern districts as a national calamity and to provide a disaster relief fund. TN CM has said that the damage caused by the heavy rains has not been seen in history in 100 years in the southern districts.

 

"Therefore, Rs. 2000 crore from the disaster relief fund needs to be given for livelihood assistance for Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts," DIPR said.
