Chennai: Five people died after the car in which they travelled rammed into a parked lorry at Peringalathur in Chennai during the early morning hours of Sunday.


The deceased were identified as Raja Harris and Naveen, residents of Mettur, Ajay, resident of Trichy, Rahul, a resident of Pudukottai and Aravind Shankar, a resident of Chennai. They were in their early twenties. 


According to a report from IANS, the youths were travelling to Vandalur from Chennai and the accident took place near Perungulathur between 1:30 am and 2:30 am on Sunday. 


The report said that the driver and other occupants of the car died on the spot after the car rammed into a lorry that was parked on the side of the road with long iron rods. The bodies of the deceased caught inside the vehicle as the car was damaged beyond recognition, the report added.

Alerted by the commuters, police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of the deceased after cutting the car open. 


Quoting an unidentified police official, the report said that police officials are collecting CCTV footage in the surrounding area to identify the actual cause of the accident. The official had told IANS that they are yet to confirm whether the car had rammed into the parked lorry directly or some other vehicle had hit the car and as a result, the car lost its control and rammed into the parked lorry. 


The recovered bodies are sent to a government hospital for postmortem. Police are further investigating the case.
