Chennai: The Viralimalai police booked three police personnel for allegedly assaulting a person with visual disability for giving complaints about an illegal black-market liquor sale near a government school in the vicinity on Thursday. 


According to a report on Times of India, the victim Sankar (29), who runs an electric shop near the school in Bagavanpatti, was assaulted by Viralimalai police, including Grade I constable Senthilkumar and constables Prabhu and Ashok Kumar on Wednesday. 


Following the incident, Sankar in a video said that school students have been facing issues for a long time due to liquor sales and he had been taking the issue to the police.

However, his complaints turned futile since police refused to take action against the accused, the report said.

Further, Sankar said that the police on Wednesday got angered by his frequent complaints picked him up and thrashed him with lathi injuring him on elbows and buttocks. He was later admitted to Viralimalai GH for treatment.


On Wednesday night, Sankar shared the issue with P Palaniappan, an advocate, who took the matter to IGP Central Zone Balakrishnan.

Later, Balakrishnan ordered a probe and SP Nisha Parthiban handed over the suspension order to the three cops.


The cops were also booked under charges of voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under various sections of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act. 


Balakrishnan also appointed two nodal officers to help people with disabilities to file complaints in the district police offices. They can also seek help from the DIGs of Trichy and Thanjavur range at 0431-2333909 and 04362-277577, respectively.
