Coimbatore police on Tuesday launched 'Police Akka' project to ensure safety of girl students in colleges in and around the city. As part of the project, women police officials will visit the colleges often where a trust-based rapport is created with college girls and protect them from crime.
A team of 37 women personnel known as "Police Akka" has been formed. As part of the project, the women personnel would visit 60 colleges in the city and talk to girl students to understand the problems they face.
Coimbatore Commissioner of Police V Balakrishnan launched the project at the commisisonerate. "Women police officials will visit the college once a week or 15 days. Girl students can meet them and open up on their issues," Balakrishnan said as quoted by news agency ANI.

During the launch, the Coimbatore Commissioner addressed the police officers and representatives of the 60 colleges. "We will launch the project in college separately. Contact numbers of women police officers will be displayed in girls' hostels on the college premises. Any girl can contact them and air their grievances," The New Indian Express said quoting Balakrishnan.
The commissioner expressed confidence that the initiative would get a good response. While stating that girl students safety is utmost important, he said that the women cops are trained to listen to girl students' problems and will give suggestions and assist them to take necessary actions.
