Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday launched face recognition software to assist the police officials during their investigation.
According to a report in The Hindu, the software would help the police personnel to compare the photos of suspects with a data resource uploaded in the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). More than 5.30 lakh photos of suspects were uploaded to the CCTNS website, it stated.
An official statement informed that the face recognition software would compare suspects, missing persons, accused persons, and unidentified corpses with the data from the CCTNS website.

If the accused or suspect, whom police personnel from a particular station was looking up at the software, was involved in another crime dealt with by another police department, the data related to his/her would be shared between the stations, the report said.
The statement further informed that the software would also help the police personnel to check whether the person in question was a history sheeter or any warrant has been issued against him/her. The software could be installed both in the computers at the police stations and in the smartphones of the police personnel.
As per the report, the department also has plans to improve the software to be able to compare and identify faces through CCTV footage. It would be helpful in identifying people who were missing or being looked out for, with the help of CCTV footage collected from public places.
