Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Highways Minister EV Velu proposed to construct a four-lane elevated corridor on Anna Salai and a flyover at Kattupakkam near Poonamalle to decongest the city's traffic at a cost of Rs 807 crore.
Making the announcements at the Assembly on Tuesday, EV Velu said, the elevated corridor in Anna Salai would ease traffic movement in Eldams Roads, SIET Women's College, Cenotaph Road and CIT Road.
The Anna Salai corridor which is estimated to be around Rs 485 crore is expected to connect Teynampet and Saidapet. The particular 3.2 km stretch alone is used by at least 2 lakh motorists every day.

Talking to ToI, Highways Department officials said that there would be no delays in the project and it would not interfere with metro rail tunnels.
The flyover on Kundrathur Road in Kattupakam is expected to come up at the cost of Rs 322 crore.
Further, EV Velu said, the government has also floated tenders for constructing a flyover at Madhya Kailash junction and that the work would begin soon.

Another Rs 56 crore would be spent for making Chennai roads more pedestrian-friendly, said EV Velu.
Apart from this, the government has also sought a feasibility study for an elevated corridor between Guindy and Light House at the cost of Rs 45 lakh.
