A road accident claimed the lives of five individuals, including a woman, in Pudukottai on Saturday. Additionally, 16 people sustained injuries in the accident and were subsequently transferred to Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. The accident occurred when a truck, out of control, rammed into a tea shop along the Trichy - Rameswaram Highway on Friday.


According to ANI, Pudukottai District Police said, "Five people including a woman died and 19 were injured in a road accident near Pudukkottai district earlier today. A truck lost control and rammed inside a tea shop on the Trichy - Rameswaram Highway. The injured people were taken to Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital."

At the time of the mishap, several Sabarimala temple pilgrims were having tea at the shop when a lorry crashed into it. A car and other two-wheeler vehicles, which were parked in close proximity to the tea shop, also sustained damage in the accident.














In 2022, India experienced a concerning surge in road accidents, marking an 11.9% increase compared to the previous year, as disclosed in a report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday. The data revealed that a significant portion of these accidents, totaling 1,51,997, occurred on national highways.

Tamil Nadu, in particular, recorded the highest number within this category, accounting for 18,972 accidents, constituting 12.5% of the total incidents. Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of fatalities, with 8,479 deaths, representing 13.9% of the total, followed closely by Tamil Nadu with 5,978 fatalities.
