Chennai: Around 40 police personnel attached to the Kancheepuram district police were shunted out as part of reigning due to extortion in the industrial areas of the district and surrounding areas.

According to a report on Times of India, the shunted personnel include inspectors, sub-inspectors and constables who reportedly had 'adverse' remarks against them.

The transfers are also related to the recent search for a history-sheeter 'Padappai' Guna, who allegedly demanded money from the industries, said a report on ABP Nadu.

Even earlier, the government set up a police unit under additional SP Vellathurai to curb the extortion. The team also assured the industrialist against any such incidents in the future by conducting a meet with them.

Following that, the police started the search to find 'Padappai' Guna but they arrested some of his close-links. Further, they intensified the investigation and found that some of the policemen have a link with a few history-sheeters. Hence, the police officers have ended up with the decision to transfer the cops for helping antisocials and refraining from registering cases against the accused.

The police are also likely to transfer more police personnel based on a detailed investigation.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu government initiated a major reigning in the state on November 2021 by transferring senior IPS officers. Among the transferred officials are IGP/Joint Director, Vigilance and Anti Corruption, Chennai, Inspector General of Police/Additional Commissioner, Traffic and Greater Chennai Police.
