Chennai: Eleven fishermen from Tamil Nadu were attacked and robbed by miscreants mid-sea in two separate incidents. The attack took place near Kodiyakarai.

Three persons first went into the sea for fishing from Pushpavanam on Sunday and they were fishing mid-sea, 16 nautical miles away from Kodiyakarai at 9 PM. Suddenly three miscreants who came in a boat stopped their boats and told them to hand over their catch and other equipment. When they refused, the men reportedly assaulted and robbed them. They also took away their fishing rods, their catch and other valuables, reports The New Indian Express.

The injured fishermen were taken to hospital in Arukatuthurai.

Meanwhile, another incident took place on the same day but an hour later. Eight fishermen ventured into the sea from Pushpavanam and were fishing in two motorised boats nearly 30 nautical miles away from the shore.

All of a sudden, seven men in three motorboats assaulted them and robbed them of all their valuables including torchlights and duel.

Both the fishermen group alleged that they were robbed by "Sri Lankan assailants". The Vedarnyam Marine police have registered two cases based on the complaint of the fishermen.

Last week, seven fishermen had a fortunate escape when their boat was rammed by Sri Lankan Navy vessel near Katchatheevu. In the impact, the boat started sinking and the men escaped with the help of other Tamil Nadu fishermen who came to the rescue.
