Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin announced assistance of Rs 3 lakh to the kin of the two women who lost their lives in a firecracker unit explosion in Sivakasi on Tuesday. Stalin said that he was saddened to hear about the demise before announcing the ex-gratia. 


Taking to Twitter, Stalin said, "I am deeply saddened to hear the news about the demise of Murugeswari (39) of Viswanathan and Banu (39) of Magudampatti in an unfortunate fire explosion at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in Sivakasi of Virudhunagar district."


"I express my condolence to the families of the deceased. I have also ordered Rs 3 lakh ex-gratia to each family from CM's relief fund,” he said.

Two women, Murugeswari and Banu, were working in a firecracker manufacturing unit. They were handling explosive materials in the unit in Sivakasi of Virudhunagar district. It is believed that the crackers exploded due to friction.


The police said, "An investigation on the reason for the accident is on." 


Further investigations are on. 


Sivakasi is the fireworks capital of South India with an annual turnover of Rs 6000 crore. The industry employs over 8 lakh workers. 


Earlier, an explosion took place at the matchbox manufacturing at Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district on Monday. 



In March, nine persons died and several others suffered injuries after a major fire broke out at a firecracker unit in Kuruvi hills in Kanchipuram. The fire also spread to the godown near the explosion site and created a major mishap.
