Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the rain and the flood situation in southern parts of the state, news agency ANI reported. Stalin urged PM Modi to declare the damage caused by the Michaung storm and the heavy rainfall in the southern districts as a "national calamity" and to provide a disaster relief fund.
In order to provide relief to the people who have sufferred due to the extremely heavy rainfall and flooding in southern districts of Tamil Nadu, Stalin said that the damage caused by the heavy rains has not been witnessed in history in 100 years in the southern districts. "Therefore, Rs. 2000 crore from the disaster relief fund needs to be given for livelihood assistance for Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts," DIPR stated.
Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli are the four southern districts that have received extremely severe rainfall, with 95 cm recorded in Thoothukudi.
As torrential rain continued to pummelled portions of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, at least ten people were killed as a result of weather-related events. Several regions remained inundated as officials launched with rescue and relief activities. The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhawan announced on social media that the situation is "particularly bad in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli" districts.
Heavy rain continued to pummelled portions of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued no significant warnings in the state. "Squally weather with wind speed 40-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph likely to prevail along and off South Tamil Nadu coast, over Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these sea areas during above mentioned period," IMD stated.
