In a move that threatens to disrupt the fireworks industry in the state, Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TAFMA) has announced an indefinite strike, beginning on Friday against the inspection of small firecracker factories. The strike comes as a response to the recent scrutiny of small-scale firecracker manufacturers in the Sivakasi region.
According to ANI, Fireworks units (TAFMA) begin indefinite strike in protest against inspection of small firecracker factories. The Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TAFMA) has initiated an indefinite strike starting today to oppose the inspection of small firecracker factories in the vicinity of Sivakasi. Approximately 10,000 workers have been rendered jobless due to the closure of 150 firecracker factories affiliated with this association. Small firecracker manufacturers collectively generate an annual revenue of around Rs 800 to 1000 crores.

Earlier this month, a blast at a fireworks factory in Sivakasi, situated in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two women. Officials reported several others sustained injuries in the blast. Based on the information, emergency response teams, comprising police and fire personnel, were swiftly sent to the site to conduct rescue operations. The wounded, including the two in critical condition, were transferred to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College and Hospital, according to a report on IANS.
Sivakasi, recognized as the "fireworks capital of India," boasts an annual turnover of Rs 6,000 crore, directly employing over one lakh individuals and indirectly supporting the livelihood of around two and a half lakh people.
