Chennai: After 31 years of the legal battle, Rajiv Gandhi's assassination convict AG Perarivalan was released on bail from Puzhal prison in Tiruvallur on Tuesday. Perarivalan and his mother Arputham Ammal in front of the Puzhal jail premises thanked everyone who stood by them in the ‘fight for justice.


In a press address, Arputham Ammal on Tuesday said, “This is an important phase in the 31-year fight for justice. In the fight for release, the time has not completely favoured us but this bail is an interim relief. My fight will continue with your support until my son and all other prisoners in the case are released from jail.”

“I thank TN CM Stalin, TN government, TN Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami and everyone who stood by us. I would also like to recall Sengodi who gave her life for the cause. I thank media, lawyers, human rights activist and public,” she said.


“Arivu (Perarivalan) and I are waiting to meet each of you individually to thank you for fighting for the cause. We both will definitely meet you all to show our gratitude once Arivu gets released from the prison without any charges against him,” she said.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered bail to Perarivalan who was serving life sentence in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case after over 30 years’ jail term. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and BR Gavai taking note of the submission that AG Perarivalan served over 30 years jail term pronounced bail for the 47-year-old Perarivalan.


Perarivalan was arrested in June 1991.
