Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the convocation of The Gandhigram Rural Institute-Deemed to be University in Dindigul on Friday. In the convocation, PM handed over gold medals to four toppers and honorary doctorates to two maestros.
At the convocation, musicians including Ilayaraja and Umayalpuram Sivaraman were conferred honorary doctorates. PM Modi handed over the recognition to the maestros.
On Friday, Prime Minister Modi reached Madurai airport from Bengaluru at 2.53 pm. At Madurai Airport, PM Modi also met Tamil Nadu Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami along with MLAs supporting him. He also met O AIADMK leader Paneerselvam along with the members of his camp.
He then started to Dindigul in a chopper. Later, PM reached Gandhigram university to attend the convocation at 3.30 pm. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and CM MK Stalin were also present during the convocation.
As a result, police have intensified surveillance in Dindigul, Chinnalapatti, Gandhigram and Ambathurai areas.

The convocation ceremony is being held at Gandhigram rural university after three years due to the pandemic.
The PM will also hand over the medals to the four toppers due to security aspects.
Overall, 2,314 students completed their graduation from Gandhigram rural university in the academic year 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021.
PM Modi visited Tamil Nadu as part of his 2-day visit to the Southern districts of the country. The PM reached Bengaluru on Friday morning and took part in multiple government events. PM Modi was welcomed by Bengaluru CM Bommai and the Governor. Later, he inaugurated Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport at Bengaluru, built at a cost of around Rs 5000 crore.
He flagged off Chennai-Mysuru Vande Bharat Express and Bharat Gaurav Kashi Yatra train from Bengaluru KSR Railway Station.
PM then unveiled 108 metre long bronze statue of Sri Nadaprabhu Kempegowda.
