Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that the northeast monsoon will hit Tamil Nadu from Saturday onwards.


In the latest forecast, the IMD said, “With setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels over Bay of Bengal and extreme South Peninsular India, the Northeast Monsoon rains are likely to commence over Southeast Peninsular India around October 29, 2022.”


Scattered to fairly widespread light-moderate rain with isolated heavy rains and thunderstorm is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikkal on Saturday and Sunday.

The MET said, "Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal from Friday till Sunday." 


In a tweet, IMD Chennai said, “Light rain very likely to occur over Ayanavaram, Cheyyur, Perambur, Sriperambudur, Thirukalukundram, Thiruporur, Thiruvottiyur, Uthukottai, Vandalur, Mathavaram areas within next 2 hours.”






Meanwhile, it also said that sky condition will remain partly cloudy in Chennai for the next 48 hours.

According to the weatherman, heavy rain is likely to lash 20 districts including Chengalpet, Villupuram, Myladuthurai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur.


The northeast monsoon was supposed to hit the state on October 20, but the IMD said that it was delayed due to a cyclonic storm formed in the Bay of Bengal and landed in Bangladesh.
