Chennai: Tamil Nadu Minister for Electricity, V Senthil Balaji directed the officials to suspend an electricity board employee after he was found in an inebriated state while in working hours at Korukkupet substation in Chennai during the wee hours of Thursday.


Around 11 pm on Wednesday, the minister had conducted a surprise inspection at the EB head office at Anna Salai in Chennai. During his visit to the control room at the head office, he attended a complaint call and assured the complainant to take action. He then directed the officials to take stern action regarding the issue. 


The minister then visited the substation at Korukupettai around 12 am. During his visit, he had found one of the employees under the influence of alcohol. He immediately directed the senior officials to place him under suspension.

Being alerted about a power cut in Tondiarpet, he then visited the area to inspect the ongoing repair works. Residents had complained about the frequent power cuts in their locality and no steps were taken by the officials to rectify despite several complaints. After assuring the public that actions will be taken within a few hours after the complaints were registered, he directed the officials regarding the same. 


While speaking to reporters, the minister said, "The previous government had not replaced the faulty transformers. We have procured about 6,800 transformers at the cost of Rs 625 crore based on the directions of the chief minister MK Stalin and installation works are going on at full pace." 


He further said that they had learned that some of the employees are lethargic in acting on public complaints and disciplinary actions would be taken against them after conducting an inquiry.
