Chennai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) sleuths are conducting surprise raids at a special camp in Trichy Central Prison on Tuesday in connection with the seizure of ammunition and drugs on Vizhinjam coast in March 2021.
The NIA started raiding the special camp in Trichy Central Jail Complex under the leadership of NIA SP Dharmaraj. Once the raids started, Trichy District Collector Pradeep Kumar visited the special camp in person and inquired about the raid.
Talking to reporters, Trichy District Collector Pradeep Kumar said that the investigation started early this morning in the special camp at the Trichy Central Jail complex.
Around 143 people from different countries including Bulgaria, Sri Lanka and Sudan are held in the special camp in the Trichy Central Jail complex.

The search is underway by NIA officers and it will be completed in two hours.
The NIA is reportedly conducting raids in connection with the seizure of 300 kg of heroin and 1000 live rounds of 9 mm ammunition in the coast of Vizhinjam of Thiruvananthapuram in March 2021.

Last year, a Sri Lankan national Suresh Rajan was arrested in the case. He was in an alleged link with Pakistan-based drug peddler Haji Salim.
The duo had often traveled between Dubai, Iran and Pakistan. They also transacted crores of rupees in Rajan's name. The NIA officers along with TN and Kerala forces have been working on exploring LTTE angle.
