Chennai: There cannot be a New Year without celebration and mass celebrations cannot be without restrictions. Therefore, just like the previous years, Chennai police have imposed restrictions for New Year 2023 celebrations. 


Tamil Nadu police imposed restrictions from Saturday, the eve of New Year. Some of the restrictions are aimed at ensuring the night without any fatalities and untoward incidents. 


According to India Today, the new year celebration will be permitted only from 6 pm on December 31, 2023 and 1 am on January 1, 2023


- No celebration will be permitted on beaches including Marina and Elliot 


- Police have intensified security in beaches, temples and other places of congregation


- Restrictions are also in place against drunk driving. The police have given provision for persons who have consumed liqour to book cabs to reach back home


- The police have also warned people against speeding their vehicles and racing


- People can also avail help through the official app of the police department 'Help' and 'Kaval Ushai' app


- The fire department has also been equipped to face any emergencies


- The police have also requested the general public to report dangerous activities including racing on the toll-free number 100. 


- The police have also assured to provide security near locked houses to prevent crimes


- A separate Standard Operating Procedure has been issued for pubs


- The pubs will be monitored through CCTV cameras

Traffic Regulations

On the traffic regulations, the Foreshore service road will be closed on Saturday from 7 pm to 6 am on January 1, 2023. The traffic movement on Kamarajar Salai from the war memorial to the lighthouse will be restricted from 8 pm.


The vehicles from RK Salai will be diverted at VM Street junction and from Parrys vehicular movement will be diverted towards Kamarajar Salai.


Meanwhile, Health Minister Ma Subramanian requested to follow COVID-19 protocol to avoid the spread of infections.
