Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed their deepest condolences to the kin of those who died in the train fire accident in Madurai on Saturday. TN CM and UP CM announced ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh respectively to the kin of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s relief fund. Nine persons died and 20 others suffered injuries after a fire broke out from a smuggled cylinder in a coach of a stationed train at Madurai Railway Station.
In a press note, Stalin said, “A spiritual special tourist train from Uttar Pradesh to Rameswaram with additional coaches attached at Nagercoil railway station was halted at Madurai railway station early morning today (26-8-2023). I am extremely saddened to learn that nine people who were on that train died in an unexpected fire while they attempted to cook in the coach.“
“I express my deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased. I have ordered to extend Rs 3 lakh ex-gratia from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund,” he said adding that arrangements were being made to take the deceased to their native places.
TN CM Stalin said that he directed Madurai District Collector to immediately visit the accident site and carry out appropriate rescue work and provide special treatment to the injured at Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital.
He said that he also requested Minister Moorthy to go to the spot to render necessary assistance.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of the people from Uttar Pradesh who died in the accident.
Taking to X, Yogi Adityanath said, "Instructions have been given to provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of every citizen of Uttar Pradesh who died in this accident.The loss of lives in the unfortunate train accident in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved families."
Earlier, Southern Railways announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased persons.
