Chennai: A third-year electrical engineering (B.Tech) student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras was found dead in his hostel room on the campus on Tuesday. 


According to Times of India, the deceased student was identified as V Vaipu Pushpak Sree Sai from Andhra Pradesh. 


On Monday, Sree Sai did not attend his classes so his friends went to Alaknanda hostel on the IIT campus, where he was residing. 


An investigation officer told TOI that the students found out that the door to his room was locked from the inside. So they then broke open the door and found out that Sree Sai was dead. 


Later, the students alerted the police who reached the spot.


They registered a case and started the investigation. No suicide note was found in the room. 


Later, the police sent the body for postmortem.


In a statement, IIT-Madras said: "It is with deep anguish that IIT-Madras conveys the untimely passing away of a third year Electrical B.Tech student of the electrical engineering department on March 14."


The institute also said that the parents of the student have been informed, adding it has requested the privacy of the student's family.


The institute further said that it expresses condolences to the family, and stands united in grief along with the friends and relatives of the student.


The IIT-Madras also said that an internal inquiry committee including elected student representatives has been constituted.


The committee will look into the details regarding the death of the student.

This is the second such incident reported at IIT Madras in a month. On February 14, an M.Tech student of IIT-Madras was found dead in his hostel room.


The student was a native of Maharashtra and was residing at Mahanadhi hostel on the IIT-M campus.
