Tamil Nadu government passed an order making it mandatory for hotels and lodges to provide accommodation with toilets and bathrooms to the guest's drivers. An amendment was made in  Tamil Nadu Combined Development and Building Rules, 2019.


In a notification, Principal Secretary to Government Apoorva said, "In cases of Hotels and Lodges, a dormitory with 1 (one) bed space (with moving area around the bed) for each car parking space required for the guest rooms in such Hotel/Lodge along with 1 (one) separate toilet and 1 (one) separate bathroom for every 8 (eight) beds or part thereof attached to the dormitory shall be provided exclusively to provide accommodation to the drivers of the guests.”







The dormitory may be provided either within the premises of the hotel or lodge or within a distance of 250 meters radius of the premises.

“In cases of Hotels and Lodges, a dormitory with 1 (one) bed space (with moving area around the bed) for each car parking space required for the guest rooms in such Hotel/Lodge along with 1 (one) separate toilet and 1 (one) separate bathroom for every 8 (eight) beds or part thereof attached to the dormitory shall be provided exclusively to provide accommodation to the drivers of the guests,” she said.


The Tamil Nadu Combined Development and Building (TNCDB) Rules, 2019 has been amended mandating hotels and lodges to provide amenities such as dormitories to vehicle drivers. In this regard, two specific TNCDB rules have been tweaked, as per a report on PTI.


The government order was issued for this purpose on June 28, 2023. The new regulations are designed to make sure that drivers get enough rest and sleep before they resume their jobs.
