Chennai: Tamil Nadu government will celebrate former TN CM Karunanidhi's birthday on June 3 as a government function, said TN CM Stalin on Tuesday. He also said, a statue of Karunanidhi will be inaugurated at Omandurar Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Chennai.
Making the announcement in the state Assembly on Tuesday, Stalin said, “From now on, the birthday of Karunanidhi, June 3, will be celebrated as a government event. On June 3, Kalaignar Karunanidhi's statue will also be opened on Omandurar Government Hospital campus."
Stalin said, "Karunanidhi is the only leader who won all the elections he contested from 1957 to 2016. He won from Kullithalai in 1957, Thanjavur in 1962, Saidapet 1967 and 1971, Anna Nagar 1977 and 1980, Harbour 1989 and 1991, Chepauk 1996 and 2006, Thiruvarur 2011 and 2016."

"He ruled Tamil Nadu for five terms. He served as an MLA for 60 years in the Assembly.
He was instrumental in getting recognition for Tamil as classical language, increasing reservation for SC/ST people in jobs, property rights for women, setting up of SIPCOT, SIDCO, Tidel Park, 108 Ambulance, free health insurance and other social justice schemes," he said.

Further, CM Stalin also listed several other measures implemented by Karunanidhi.
Speaking after TN CM, Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi MLA Velmurugan said, "The party would like to remind that Karunanidhi brought schools and medical colleges to every district of the state. So, I see this event as a way of being thankful for the efforts of Karunanidhi."
