The Congress MLA fell ill soon after his victory in Erode East Byelections. The Erode East Bypolls were necessitated after the death of EVKS Elangovan's son Thirumahan Everaa. In January, Thirumahan complained of chest pain and died on the way to the hospital.

Following his demise, the Election Commission notified the seat as vacant. Congress announced EVKS Elangovan as the candidate.

The AIADMK’s EPS and OPS factions announced that they will field a candidate for the byelections. Both factions named a candidate each. However, BJP tried to mediate between the two factions. Later, the EC permitted EPS’ faction. The candidate Thennarasu from EPS faction took part in the race.

The polling took place on February 27 and over 74% of people cast their votes. The votes were counted on March 2. In the elections, EVKS Elangovan received a historic victory. AIADMK candidate Thennarasu was pushed to second place due to the vote difference of over 50,000 votes.
