Erode East MLA and senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan was discharged from Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre on Thursday. Elangovan was admitted to the hospital for coronary artery disease and COVID infection last month.

In a media release, Sudagar Singh, medical director of Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre said, "EVKS Elangovan was admitted on March 15, 2023 in Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre with coronary artery disease and COVID infection. He has recovered from COVID infection. He is stable and discharged."

Earlier, the hospital authorities said that EVKS Elangovan tested negative for COVID but was receiving treatment for congestive heart failure.

On March 22, a press release from SRMC said, "EVKS Elangovan was admitted on March 15 in Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre with coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and COVID infection."

“Now his COVID is negative and recovering from congestive heart failure in the Intensive Care Unit,” it said.

Prior to his health issues, on March 10, senior Congress leader and former Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan was sworn-in as an MLA of Erode (East) constituency. Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu administered the oath to the newly elected legislator.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, ministers, legislators, Congress leaders and alliance partners were present during the swearing-in ceremony. The Congress leader gained entry into the Tamil Nadu Assembly for the second time after a gap of 38 years. He was previously an MLA in 1984.

Elangovan defeated his nearest rival K.S. Thenarasu of the AIADMK by a margin of 66,087 votes in the recently-held Erode East Assembly polls.

The by-election was necessitated following the sudden demise of Elangovan's son and sitting legislator E. Thirumahan Everaa on January 4, 2023. Thirumahan experienced a chest pain and was rushed to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival by the doctors.
