Chennai: President Droupadi Murmu landed in Madurai for her two-day visit on Saturday. 


Droupadi Murmu was welcomed by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi and Minister Mano Thangaraj at the airport.


President Droupadi Murmu reached Madurai at 11.30 AM on Saturday. From the airport, the President headed to Madurai Meenakashi Amman Temple. 


Murmu will witness a swami darshan at the temple and after the darshan, she will participate in a special Annadhana program. 


After the visit, the President is set to fly to Coimbatore to attend Maha Shivratri Celebrations at Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore on Saturday. 


This is the first time the President is visiting Tamil Nadu after taking charge. As a result, security has been beefed up in Coimbatore and Madurai to avoid any untoward incidents and to ensure her smooth participation in the events. 


The Maha Shivratri Celebrations will begin at Isha Yoga Center at 6 PM on February 18 and continue till 6 am on Sunday. The events will take place in the presence of Murmu and Sadhguru. The celebrations will also be live-streamed in 16 languages on all major networks in India in languages including English, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and more.

The lineup for the event includes meditation, music, dance and cultural performance in front of an illuminated Adiyogi statue. 


On her two-day visit, Murmu is also set to address the members of 78th Staff Course at Defence Services Staff College at Wellington in Coimbatore on Sunday. 


President's security team also visited the districts and inspected the security arrangements in place in Madurai. The District Collector also held a consultative meeting with officials on the security arrangements. Later, the district also banned the flying of drones on February 17 and 18.
