Chennai: Two months after human faeces were found in an overhead tank in a village in Pudukottai district, residents of Pudhupatti village near Sivakasi said that they found a carcass of a dog dumped in an overhead tank. Later, Pudhupatti police based on a complaint arrested a man from the same village.

According to Indian Express, the tank was constructed under Jal Jeevan Mission last year and the water from the tank was consumed by people of four streets in the village.

Every month, the villagers reportedly cleaned the tank on February 5.  This month too, the villagers emptied on Saturday and an inspection was conducted to check whether the water was drained from it. However, the work was not carried out on Sunday due to a shortage of labour.

On Monday, the workers reported to work and went to the tank for cleaning. However, they sensed a foul smell and found a carcass of a dog. They soon informed Pudukkottai panchayat president on Monday, said a report on The New Indian Express.

Later, the panchayat chief informed the police.

Assistant director of panchayats G Aravind said, the panchayat tank is being cleaned with bleaching powder and the residents are being given water through tankers.

Based on a complaint from the villagers, Pudupatti police booked a case under sections including fouling water, causing means of any poison, with intent to commit offence and killing animal of Indian Penal Code.

After the investigation, the police held Aiyannar (22) who was mentally unwell for dropping the dead dog inside the tank.
