Conversion Row: Madras HC Directs Family To Cremate Body Of Class 12 Girl Who Died By Suicide In Thanjavur

Chennai: The Madurai bench of Madras High Court directed the family of a Class 12 girl who died by suicide to accept her body and cremate her on Saturday. The Court also declined to order a re-postmortem by citing that the girl did not mention about sexual advances by anyone as a reason for her death. 

A single-judge bench of Justice Ramanathan gave the directions while hearing a petition by the girl’s father Muruganathan demanding a CB CID inquiry into the case and alleged that they were being harassed by the police. 

In an urgent hearing, the Court told the police to restrain from harassing the parents and instead probe the matter that led to the demise of the girl. 

The Judge then questioned the police whether her parents mentioned any forced religious conversion as the reason for the extreme step. The police said that neither the girl nor the parents mentioned forced religious conversion. 

Further, the judge asked whether the girl mentioned about any sexual abuse in her dying declaration. The police replied negative. 

Following this, the judge said that there was no need for a re-autopsy since there was no sexual abuse faced by the girl. The judge then told the father and mother to appear before a judicial magistrate to record a statement on Sunday. Later, he adjourned the case to Monday.

A Class 12 girl attempted to kill herself in a hostel in Thanjavur on January 9. She started to vomit and her condition deteriorate following which she was admitted to Thanjavur GH on January 12. The girl later told the police that she attempted suicide since her warden forced her to clean the rooms. Later, the girl then died on Wednesday without repsonding to treatment.
