New Delhi: In a shocking case, a 21-year-old man died of burn injuries after he accidentally fell into a vessel of hot rasam at a wedding hall last week in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, police said on Monday, reported PTI.
The victim, identified as V Sathishkumar, is a college student who was working part-time in a catering firm.
The deceased was a resident of Athipattu Pudhunagar near Ennore and was pursuing BCA at a private college in Korukkupet, an IndiaTimes report said.
According to the police, he was serving food to guests at a marriage function last week when he slipped and accidentally fell into the cauldron which had boiling rasam meant to be served to the guests.
The victim was immediately rushed to a government hospital in the city with serious burns. He died on April 30 without responding to treatment.
According to IndiaTimes, the Minjur Police have registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC (unnatural death). Later, the body was handed over to the student’s family after a post-mortem.
An investigation is underway, the police revealed.
Last month, a second-year B. Tech student of IIT-Madras died allegedly by suicide in Tamil Nadu, news agency ANI had reported.
The deceased, a 20-year-old student at IIT Madras, was staying in the Cauvery hostel. His friends on noticing that his room was locked for hours informed the hostel warden who in turn alerted the police. Police broke open the door and found him hanging from a ceiling fan. A case has also been registered by the Kotturpuram police.
This suicide is the fourth such incident in the last three months. In view of the recent rise in suicides on campus, IIT-Madras conducted a wellness session series for its students. The programme was launched in a bid to spread awareness on mental health and various options available to students to address and mitigate stress whenever required.
In a similar incident, in March, a body of a PhD research scholar from Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT-Madras was found hanging at his residence at Velachery in Chennai. As per the report, the deceased was a 32-year-old research scholar and a native of West Bengal.
