Chennai: The BJP along with the kin of a student from Ariyalur, who killed herself alleging that she was forced to clean the rooms of her hostel, staged a protest on Thursday demanding action against the hostel warden and other school authorities who were responsible for the death. The BJP members joined the protest alleging that a purported video of the girl showed that she took the step since she was forced to convert her religion.

However, the police arrested all the protesting members for organising a protest despite COVID-19 norms and without the permission of the police.

On Thursday, Tamil Nadu BJP president Annamalai said, “The girl consumed pesticide since she was forced to covert her religion into Christianity.  Hence, the state needs a proper anti-conversion law like Karnataka.”

However, Thanjavur SP Ravali Priya talking to reporters said, “A purported video by the girl has been circulated on social media. We will definitely investigate how the video was circulated and who shot the video.”

“Yet in the FIR, police record or dying declaration, the girl did not reveal anything about religious conversion. As per the preliminary investigation, this is not true,” she said.

A Class 12 girl consumed pesticide on January 9 in her hostel in Thanjavur. After this, she started vomiting and as her health condition continued to worsen she sent with her family. The family members took her to several private hospitals but later referred them to Thanjavur Government Hospital.

On January 12, she was admitted to the GH and only during police investigation she reveals that she consumed pesticide. She reportedly said that she took the extreme step since she was forced to clean the rooms by the warden.

Based on the declaration, the Thanjavur police have registered a case under Sections 305 (Abetment to Suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.
