Chennai: A woman who was traveling on the footboard of Tambaram-Beach suburban train was hit by a pillar close to a double discharge platform at Guindy railway station on Monday.
According to a report on Times of India, the incident took place just minutes after the train started moving after halt at the station at 8.50 am.
Following the incident, Baskar, a commuter said, the railways should swiftly construct a new foot overbridge and remove the old platforms.
The pillar was there for several years but it has started to pose a risk only recently since the platform was extended into a double discharge platform. With the new change, the exit door of ladies' coach also comes too close causing trouble for the commuters, he said.

The incident keeps happening even in other stations with double discharge platforms, said Karthik, another commuter.
However, Southern Railway Chennai division Public Relations Officer Elumalai said, the pillar was constructed within permissible space from the train.
Yet, railway officials are mulling to change the stopping point of trains to avert any untoward incidents.

Railway officials are also mulling on painting the pillars black and yellow in order to make them noticeable to the commuters.
In July 25, 2018, four persons who were riding on footboard of suburban train were killed after they were hit by a concrete fence at St Thomas Mount Railway Station at 8.22 am.
