Chennai: The overnight rainfall that started in Chennai and surrounding areas on Monday night has thrown normal life out of gear in the district. As the rain continues on Tuesday, waterlogging has been reported in many places. Following this, district administrations of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Chengalpattu among 8 districts have declared a holiday on Tuesday. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that heavy rains will continue for the next five days.

Orange alert has also been issued for Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

Heavy rainfall started to pound Chennai and surrounding districts on Monday night. The incessant spells recorded over 6-8 cm in some areas in the city left several arterial roads inundated and put motorists to suffer.

A tweet on ANI said, “ Parts of Chennai face waterlogging following rainfall here. Visuals from Pulianthope, Choolai area.”

However, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has swung into action in many places to clear the waterlogging and has also issued helpline numbers to report on the inundation. In their official social media page, GCC said, “No rainwater stagnation in Rajamannar Salai, K.K.Nagar👇#Chennaiites, as it is raining heavily #GCC requests you to be careful while commuting to workplaces and you may call us at 1913 for any grievances/help or kindly drop a #Twitter message. #ChennaiCorporation #ChennaiRains.”
