Chennai: The Chennai police are investigating a case in which a 28-year-old woman was robbed of Rs 2.5 lakh, an amount she had got after selling off her newborn. The incident took place in Purasawalkam locality on Sunday afternoon.
Based on her complaint, the police have booked a woman, Jayageetha, who had allegedly facilitated the deal as the complainant alleged that she suspected the latter's hand in the robbery. The police have also booked two men in the case.
According to a report in Times of India, the police have formed a special team to track down the accused and arrest them.
Yasmin, already a mother of one, had decided to sell off her second child because she was finding it difficult to make ends meet as her husband had left her, ToI reported.
Yasmin, who is from Puzhal, met Jayageetha from Tsunami Colony in Ennore some time ago when she was pregnant with her second child and had gone to a private hospital in Kellys for an abortion, the report said.

Jayageetha reportedly convinced Yasmin to give not abort the child, and promised her money if she sold the newborn to someone she knew. The 28-year-old agreed and gave birth to a baby boy at a government hospital in Washermenpet on November 21. The mother and son were discharged a week later.
When Yasmin informed Jayageetha about her delivery, the latter allegedly told her to bring the baby to Purasawalkam High Road on Sunday, the report said.
As directed, Yasmin came to Purasawalkam and handed over her one-week-old son to a woman, Dhanam, who had come with two men. She was given Rs 2.5 lakh and made to sign a white paper as a 'bond', as demanded by Dhanam, the report quoted the police as saying.
Yasmin then left the place with her daughter in an auto when the two men allegedly followed her and stopped her near Pulianthope. They snatched the cash from her and fled, she said in her complaint.
