Chennai: A 57-year-old bank manager died after a huge tree fell on the car in which she was traveling along with her sister in Chennai's KK Nagar on Friday.

The incident took place near the road where a stormwater drain was under-construction as part of the Singara Chennai 2.0 project two days ago.

According to an ANI, the incident took place when the woman identified as Vani Kabilan, a branch manager of Indian Overseas Bank, was returning from her office on Friday with two other people including her sister Ezhilarasi and driver Karthik.

The two sisters were seated in the backseat of the car and while the vehicle was turning towards PT Rajan Road from Lakshmana Swamy Road a huge tree fell onto the car. In the impact, the two sisters got trapped in the car but the driver managed to open the door and escape. However, the driver is absconding now.

The passersby immediately tried to rescue the sisters and Ezhilarasi was taken to ESI hospital in KK Nagar. However, they were unable to rescue Vani who got trapped under the tree.

The Fire and police personnel then came to the spot and removed the tree. Later, they sent Vani's remains for postmortem to a Government Hospital.

The police have registered a case and investigations are on.

However, Greater Chennai Corporation in a statement said that no work was carried out in the last two days and the works were stalled on June 22. They said, they stopped after they dug 10 feet away from the tree two days back.
