Chennai: The Chennai city police registered a case against five medical professionals including two doctors in connection with the death of footballer R Priya who died due to medical negligence at a government hospital in the city.
According to a report on Times of India, Priya, a BSc student at Queen Marys College, died due to medical negligence while undergoing a ligament tear surgery at Government Peripheral Hospital at Periyar Nagar in Chennai.
On Friday, the police booked five persons including Dr Somasundaram, Dr Paul Ram Sankar, an anesthetist, a duty medical officer and post-operative ward staff of the hospital.
On Tuesday, the girl died despite undergoing two other correctional surgeries. The girl initially underwent surgery for ligament tear surgery. However, the doctors due to their negligence forgot to remove a tourniquet they placed on her thigh. As a result, the blood circulation got completely cut and she was referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
At RGGGH, the doctors amputated her legs. They also performed another surgery on Monday. However, Priya died without responding to treatment on Tuesday.
After the death, the family members took to staging protests demanding the arrest of the doctors who were responsible for the death of Priya.
The Peravallur police also registered a case under sections including death due to negligence of IPC.

On Thursday, TN CM Stalin visited the family members of Priya and handed over the documents for the allocation of a home. He also expressed condolences to the family members including her brother at her home in Vyasarpadi.
Meanwhile, two doctors--Paul Ramsankar, Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics and Somasundhar, Casualty Medical Officer-- moved Madras HC seeking anticipatory bail on Friday.
The two doctors were suspended on November 15.
