Chennai: The three-day food festival in Chennai is set to be held on August 12, 13 and 14 at Island Ground. The 'Singara Chennai Food Festival 2022' is expected to showcase traditional culinary expertise including food by children and cultural events.


According to a report on The Indian Express, the festival is organised by Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department along with Eat Right India. 


Eat Right India, an initiative of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), works towards improving public health in India. It also aims to curb lifestyle-related diseases that are on the rise due to negative eating trends.


Through the event, the organisers also aim to give an opportunity to self-help group women to prove their culinary expertise and to revive traditional foods. The festival will offer food varieties ranging from Raagi Puttu, a savory breakfast reciepe made with ragi to Mudakathan Dosai, a healthy dosa made with greens and Iruttu Kadai Halwa, a signature halwa recipe of Tirunelveli district.

The festival will also have children showcasing their cooking skills. It will also have performances by folk artists. 


Several programmes will also be conducted for the people to help them identify adulterated food and on preparing healthy traditional food items.


The last day of the event will also have a walkathon. The three-day event will have stalls from 10 am to 10 pm.

Dr Satheesh Kumar, a designated food safety officer in Chennai said, 150 stalls will be set up in Island Ground and the food festival will have 90 per cent of our traditional food. Several celebrities are also a part of the food festival. 


The event was supposed to be held last year but was postponed due to the pandemic, he said.
