New Delhi: Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai on Wednesday lashed out at the DMK government for moving the Supreme Court against Governor RN Ravi for not granting assent to various Bills, saying the governor is “well within his rights to do what he is doing now”, news agency ANI reported.

Annamalai’s remarks come a day after DMK-led Tamil Nadu government moved the top court over “constitutional deadlock”, accusing the governor of not giving his assent to Bills passed by the Assembly.

According to reports, the government filed a writ petition, urging the apex court to direct the governor to give his assent to the requests within a timeframe.

“The present Writ Petition is being filed under Article32 of the Constitution of India, to declare that the inaction, omission, delay and failure to comply with the constitutional mandate by the Governor of Tamil Nadu/ first Respondent qua the consideration and assent of the Bills passed and forwarded by the Tamil Nadu State Legislature to him and the non-consideration of files, Government orders and policies forwarded by the State Government for his signature is unconstitutional, illegal, arbitrary, unreasonable besides mala fide exercise of power,” the plea read.

Slamming the government, the state BJP chief accused the DMK of “laying a trap” for the governor and said the latter was “within his rights” to do what he is doing.

“They've (DMK-led state government) gone to the Supreme Court against the governor of the state, urging him to give assent to the Bills that are in his office on a priority basis. Now, the DMK is creating an issue as if the Governor is holding 13 separate Bills...Education is in the concurrent list, but the standards of higher education is in the union list...The Governor is well within his rights...Now, the government of Tamil Nadu through an act, wants a separate examination, it violates the Supreme Court judgment because the Supreme Court had said that the Central Govt is well within its powers to have a common medical entrance examination,” ANI quoted Annamalai as saying.
