Anna University Temporarily Suspends Admissions To Civil, Mech Engineering Courses In 11 Colleges

A senior official said that they have decided to introduce vocational courses which would offer employment to students instead of civil and mechanical courses. 

Anna University temporarily suspended admission to various Tamil and English medium undergraduate degree programs in constituent colleges of the University owing to poor enrolment. The temporary suspension was ordered with effect from the academic year 2023-2024. 

According to ANI, “Tamil Nadu | Anna University temporarily suspends admission to various Tamil and English medium undergraduate degree programs in constituent colleges of the University with effect from the academic year 2023-2024.”

A circular from the Director of the Centre for Academic Courses, Hosimin Thilagar said, "It is informed that the admission to the following UG (English medium and Tamil medium) degree programmes which are offered in constituent colleges of Anna University is suspended temporarily with effect from the academic year 2023-2024 onwards, as approved by 29th Academic Council meeting." 

Some of the colleges where the programs were discontinued include UCE-Arni, UCE-Tindivanam, UCE-Villupuram, UCE-Ramanathapuram, UCE-Dindigul, UCE-Pattukottai, UCE-Nagercoil and UCE-Thoothukudi. The two majorly discontinued courses are Mechanical and Civil Engineering in Tamil and English medium. 

The BE courses were discontinued due to poor enrolment in the previous years. The BE civil engineering courses offered in English in four constituent colleges were also discontinued. A senior official from Anna University told The New Indian Express that most of the colleges had less than 10 students in civil and mechanical engineering courses so the financial burden kept increasing due to these courses.

The senior official said that they have decided to introduce vocational courses which would offer employment to students instead of civil and mechanical courses.
